Dispatches Across America

A Note from Tom Hallman, Jr.

Tom Hallman Jr., Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and Collier's new contributing editor for Dispatches, on why storytelling — not just the news — is how we make sense of who we are.

Since the beginning of time, long before books, screens, or even written language, people gathered around fires beneath starlit skies to tell stories.

Before history was recorded or laws were written, there were voices in the dark shaping meaning from experience and passing it forward.

To me, stories are about who we are, where we’ve been, and what we dream of becoming. They were our first form of communication. Stories are the thread that ties one human heart to another across generations and cultures.

Storytelling isn’t just entertainment. It is how we make sense of the world. It is how we share wisdom, heal pain, inspire courage and ignite change.

Too often, the news tells us what happened but fails to show why it matters, who it touches, or what it reveals about the human spirit. The kind of storytelling I believe in goes deeper. It asks us not just to observe, but to feel. Not just to consume information, but to understand one another.

That spirit guides my work in curating this section. The writers gathered here bring distinct voices and perspectives, yet they are united by craft and by a commitment to emotional truth. These are stories meant not only to be read, but to be felt and remembered.

My goal is simple: to publish work that matters. Work that reaches beyond the page. Work that strengthens this magazine’s commitment to meaningful storytelling and builds a community of engaged readers.

We gather differently now than we once did. The fires may be digital. The sky above us may glow with screens instead of stars. But our need for story remains unchanged.

If you are a writer — of fiction or non-fiction — and believe in the power of story to connect, illuminate, and move readers, I invite you to reach out.

Together, we can continue humanity’s oldest tradition, which is gathering, listening and sharing the stories that shape us.
